How much rice can it cook?

Up to 6.3 oz (180 g) of dry rice. That is enough for two camp portions for many users, although serving size will depend on appetite and what else is being served.

How long does the rice take to cook?

Soak the rice for 15 minutes first. While it soaks, you can heat 300 mL of water in the Petrel G2 outer pot. Then cook on low heat for 15 minutes and let the rice rest for another 10 minutes.

Is this a standalone rice cooker?

No. It is a rice cooker insert designed to be used as part of the Petrel G2 cooking setup.

Is this the same rice cooker as the Petrel G3 version?

No. This version is designed around the Petrel G2 and has a larger 400 mL capacity, with room for up to 180 g of dry rice.

Can I cook anything besides rice?

Yes. It also works for steaming eggs, reheating food, and simple steam-based camp cooking.

Can it store a fuel canister inside?

Yes. The insert itself can hold a standard 230 g threaded fuel canister for storage. However, the insert and a 230 g canister cannot both be packed inside the Petrel G2 pot at the same time.

What packing setup do you recommend with the G2?

For a more complete and compact setup, we recommend storing a 100/110 g threaded fuel canister and a folding fork-spoon inside the rice cooker insert.
A compact stove such as the Hornet II, along with a lighter or fire starter, can then be packed inside the Petrel G2 pot.

A very well made, powerful base camp stove that is a great alternative to the transitional Coleman still propane stoves and is much cheaper than other isobutane stoves with the same portability

Works great

My friend and I raced his Jetboil to my Fire Maple. Not only was my Fire Maple almost $70 cheaper, it was only about 15 seconds behind the Jetboil in boil time. And I blame that on the fact that I didn't have my temp all the way up. And I've got a couple other Fire Maple products that are just as impressive. Fully recommend.

Does what says it will do

This is a very good little stove for a great price. We used this and a Trangia with a gas adapter for three weeks of family camping this year instead of our usual Coleman gas double burner. First off it is very light and compact. But the best thing about it is how stable it is-- it feels secure when I put a full sized pot or frying pan on it. It is also very powerful-- super fast at boiling water in a kettle or pasta pot, and this is what we used it for the most. While there is some control with the valve, we did find it challenging to not burn things when cooking with this stove, even when using heavy cast iron, so we ended up using the Trangia for more delicate cooking. The piezo ignition is a nice benefit-- we didn't end up using it on a regular basis because we didn't love having our fingers right under the burner like that and using a lighter was more comfortable, but there was a point in our trip when our lighters were running out of fluid and the piezo lighter was handy. So overall, it was a great stove, and I plan to take it again on our next trip!

I love that it is very light and compact. We are using it for car camping but are short on space, so this fits in our kit and is useful when it is windy. It is a little odd that the metal wire connectors on the endsjust fall out if you turn it upside down, I might try to fix this by bending the end, but I haven't tried that yet.
