25-Minute Rice: after soaking, cook on low heat for 15 minutes, then let the rice rest for 10 minutes. Soak ahead of time, or heat the outer-pot water while the rice soaks.
Indirect Heat Cooking: uses 300 mL of water in the Petrel G2 outer pot, keeping the thin rice insert away from direct burner heat.
Lid-Locking Handles: silicone side tabs help you grip the insert and keep the lid more securely in place while rice cooks.

How much rice can it cook?

Up to 6.3 oz (180 g) of dry rice. That is enough for two camp portions for many users, although serving size will depend on appetite and what else is being served.

How long does the rice take to cook?

Soak the rice for 15 minutes first. While it soaks, you can heat 300 mL of water in the Petrel G2 outer pot. Then cook on low heat for 15 minutes and let the rice rest for another 10 minutes.

Is this a standalone rice cooker?

No. It is a rice cooker insert designed to be used as part of the Petrel G2 cooking setup.

Is this the same rice cooker as the Petrel G3 version?

No. This version is designed around the Petrel G2 and has a larger 400 mL capacity, with room for up to 180 g of dry rice.

Can I cook anything besides rice?

Yes. It also works for steaming eggs, reheating food, and simple steam-based camp cooking.

Can it store a fuel canister inside?

Yes. The insert itself can hold a standard 230 g threaded fuel canister for storage. However, the insert and a 230 g canister cannot both be packed inside the Petrel G2 pot at the same time.

What packing setup do you recommend with the G2?

For a more complete and compact setup, we recommend storing a 100/110 g threaded fuel canister and a folding fork-spoon inside the rice cooker insert.
A compact stove such as the Hornet II, along with a lighter or fire starter, can then be packed inside the Petrel G2 pot.

This G2 insert works well as a rice cooker although I do prefer the G3 insert for two reasons. The main reason I prefer the G3 insert is because of the locking lid on the G3 actually locks the insert and lid to the pot whereas this one one the G2 just doesn't seal as well making the G3 cook faster and the rice just turns out better. The other reason I prefer the G3 is because I'm usually camping by myself and the G2 rice capacity is too much for just me therefore the smaller capacity of the G3 is the perfect amount for myself. Now that being said I do prefer the G2 insert when it comes to steaming veggies and other foods like potatoes, onions, and garlic all steamed together is excellent. Therefore for just rice I prefer the G3 but for other steaming tasks I prefer the G2 with really my only complaint with the G2 insert is the lid lock if they would make it like the G3 insert it would get a 5 star
